New Year’s Eve

New Year's was days away and Sylvia, Stuart and I had double triple checked every detail imaginable with the party planners for the big celebration. Sylvia was thrilled when I shared with her that Ezra had told me about Spence. She hugged me and told me not to worry, everything would work out, then winked at me. I had no idea what she meant, but decided to go with the flow. Stuart was just as cryptic when I tried to ask him about how he and Leo had gotten along, just a smile, a noncommittal shrug and an immediate change of subject.

Ezra was also acting oddly. I noticed that if I walked into a room, he stopped talking, kissed me and summarily left. I got the feeling he was hiding something, but since my best friend was no help right now, lost in his own little Leo world, I had no one to consult with about any of it. It was maddening, but preparations for the upcoming party quickly distracted me.

We had decided to go all out formal although Ezra was hosting the party at his home, another yearly tradition. Caterers, assistants, valets and waitstaff all were busy as I went to get ready. Ezra had arranged for me to have a personal assistant and although I had felt it was an unnecessary luxury when he'd suggested it, now I was grateful. I entered the bedroom to find my clothing laid out and arranged in the order I'd need it so all I had to do was shower and dress.

At the last minute, I decided there was plenty of time for a relaxing bubble-bath instead to soothe my nerves. I added a generous portion of aromatherapy essential oils to Ezra's big jacuzzi tub, undressed and allowed myself to melt into the swirling bubbles.

I was floating on bubbles, floating and drifting light and easy like the fluff from a dandelion on the breeze...Ezra was there and we were rocking side by side in rocking chairs, holding hands on a big open porch...We were happily floating and rocking and laughing watching children play in the yard...They were chasing each other in circles and calling to us and waving...Smiling and calling, calling, "Grampa...PopPop...watch me..."

"Nigel...wake up," coming from somewhere far away, pulling me back down to earth with a familiar chuckle and a finger tenderly brushing my damp hair from my face. I opened my eyes slowly to see Ezra leaning on his crossed forearms on the edge of the tub, watching me awaken, "Hi, sleepyhead. Enjoy your nap?"

I blinked and nodded at him groggily as he pulled something from his pocket. I sensed something important was about to happen and struggled to be more alert, "I was going to wait until we were at the party, but frankly I'm nervous so now seems like as good a time as any..."
